Hello, Clubbers!
It’s time for another Classics Club Spin!
Our world may be in a Covid-19 spin right now, but that’s no excuse to stop reading! Well, actually, it has been a very good reason to stop reading…and blogging…and doing lots of other things we used to love. It’s difficult for many of us to settle and focus on anything when the latest news and Covid updates constantly stream into our phones, our social media feeds and TV screens. Here, at the Classics Club, we hope to drag you away from the latest updates and lure you back into a community of readers.
What is the spin?
It’s easy. At your blog, before next Sunday 19th April 2020, create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list.
This is your Spin List.
You have to read one of these twenty books by the end of the spin period.
Try to challenge yourself. For example, you could list five Classics Club books you have been putting off, five you can’t WAIT to read, five you are neutral about, and five free choice (favourite author, re-reads, ancients, non-fiction, books in translation — whatever you choose.)
On Sunday 19th April, we’ll post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by 1st June, 2020.
We’ll check in here on the 1st June to see who made it the whole way and finished their spin book!
What’s Next?
- Go to your blog.
- Pick twenty books that you’ve got left to read from your Classics Club List.
- Post that list, numbered 1-20, on your blog before Sunday 19th April.
- We’ll announce a number from 1-20.
- Read that book by 1st June 2020.
This is meant to be a fun, social way to read another book from your classics club list. We’re very relaxed about how you set it up, we simply want you to read more classics!
Sometime this week, at your blog, you might post something like:
My Book Spin List for the Classics Club –
- Jane Eyre
- The Inferno
- Picnic at Hanging Rock
- Oliver Twist
- Pale Horse, Pale Rider
- Gone With the Wind
- Don Quixote
- Testament of Youth
- Richard III
- The Iliad
- Jude the Obscure
- I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
- The Master and Margarita
- Dracula
- The Home and the World
- Sense & Sensibility
- Madame Bovary
- The Diary of Anne Frank
- Antigone
- The Tale of Genji
(Obviously, YOU choose what books YOU want to list, in what order.)
Next Sunday?
We will announce a number from 1 through 20. When we announce it, go to your Spin list. Find that number, read (and hopefully, review) the book listed for that number by 1st June 2020.
So, if (for example) we announce #14, and if the above list was your Spin List, you’d have to read Dracula.
The prize, of course, is the reading experience 🙂
When we announce the number next week, come back and tell us your spin title.

Really enjoyed your sci-fi based spin list. Dune was such a big favourite of mine when I read it in my early twenties. I’ve wondered if it would hold up to a reread.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Thanks! Well this year would be a good one for a reread, but I understand the hesitation. There’s a couple favorites that I’m worried about revisiting.

This comes at a good time. I’m in the middle of a long read, that I’m not enjoying (determined to finish nonetheless), but will be happy to break it up with something else to read at the same time. My Spin List

This spin wasn’t initially planned for another week or so, but decided to bring it forward given the times. Thought everyone might need a good distraction.

I suggested over here that you guys should draw #21 & make everyone read a title from their list they didn’t put on their spin list. 😆

I did consider rigging it, to give us number 19.
But chance it will be 🙂

I would be very happy with my #19 pick!

That’s a fun idea, but it wouldn’t work for everyone. When I got near to the end of my list, I had to list books more than once for the spin just to have enough to make 20. I see at least one member has done that this time. I guess for those people, we could say pick any book.
LikeLike
Yes, they’d have to pick any different classic then. Something not on their list at all. For a loop they’d truly be thrown! 😉

I don’t know if our administrator who organizes the spins saw your message, but I’ll mention it to her.

Ha, well thanks. I am totally being silly though. Although it would make me chuckle if the club drew 21. Unprecedented in the history of the spins! 😆

I don’t know. It might be fun, but maybe some people who carefully choose their short list to leave out the books they don’t want to read right now would think it was a dirty trick? Not sure. Not everyone has a good sense of humor.

But 21 is Black Jack! 😀
Which means you have to read Jack Kerouac.
(I’d be the first in line to draw up a strongly worded petition. I don’t want to read Jack Kerouac and would consider such an outcome dirty business.) 😆
