CC Spin #19

Hello, Clubbers!

It’s time for another Classics Club Spin!spinning bookWhat is the spin?

It’s easy. At your blog, before next Tuesday 27th November 2018, create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list.

This is your Spin List.

You have to read one of these twenty books by the end of the spin period.

Try to challenge yourself. For example, you could list five Classics Club books you have been putting off, five you can’t WAIT to read, five you are neutral about, and five free choice (favourite author, re-reads, ancients, non-fiction, books in translation — whatever you choose.)

On Tuesday 27th November, we’ll post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List, by 31st January, 2019.

Yes, you read that date correctly: the 31st January 2019!

This is an extra special, super-dooper CHUNKSTER edition of the Classics Club Spin. We challenge you to fill this spin list with 20 of those HUGE books you’ve been putting off reading because you didn’t have enough time. With this spin we are giving you the time  – nearly 10 weeks in fact – to tackle one of those imposing tomes on your classics shelf.

We’ll check in here on the 31st January 2019 to see who made it the whole way and finished their spin book!

What’s Next?

  • Go to your blog.
  • Pick twenty CHUNKSTER books that you’ve got left to read from your Classics Club List.
  • Post that list, numbered 1-20, on your blog before Tuesday 27th November.
  • We’ll announce a number from 1-20.
  • Read that book by 31st January 2019.

This is meant to be a fun, social way to read another book from your classics club list. We’re very relaxed about how you set it up, we simply want you to read more classics!

Sometime this week, at your blog, you might post something like:

My Book Spin List for the Classics Club –

  1. Jane Eyre
  2. The Inferno
  3. Picnic at Hanging Rock
  4. Oliver Twist
  5. Clarissa
  6. Gone With the Wind
  7. Don Quixote
  8. Testament of Youth
  9. Richard III
  10. The Iliad
  11. Jude the Obscure
  12. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
  13. The Master and Margarita
  14. Dracula
  15. The Home and the World
  16. Sense & Sensibility
  17. Madame Bovary
  18. The Diary of Anne Frank
  19. Antigone
  20. The Tale of Genji

(Obviously, YOU choose what books YOU want to list, in what order.)

Next Tuesday?

We will announce a number from 1 through 20. When we announce it, go to your Spin list. Find that number, read (and hopefully, review) the book listed for that number by 31st January 2019.

So, if (for example) we announce #14, and if the above list was your Spin List, you’d have to read Dracula.

The prize, of course, is the reading experience 🙂

When we announce the number next week, come back and tell us your spin title.

Who’s in?

Add the link for your spin list below and join in the discussion.

  1. Does this have to be a list of chunksters? Because I’m already planning to read The Odyssey in January. I don’t think I will have time for any other chunksters until then. Otherwise I’ll have my list up today.

  2. I’m in! Gosh – I’ve already committed to Little Dorrit and all five of Dickens’ Christmas books over Christmas but I’ll still have time for another chunkster, won’t I? Won’t I??? *faints and reaches for the medicinal chocolate*

  3. AAAAAaaa! I’m so excited! I’ve been waiting for this post for a while. After the last spin, I actually categorized the remaining books on my list by the categories of “books I’ve been putting off”, “books I can’t wait to read”, and “books I’m neutral about”. Then I stuck that in a randomizer blender to get the following list:

Also, I’m so glad to have the extra time! There are a few on my list that I was thinking I’d have to read next year outside of spin times just so they’d never show up on a spin list. I’d never finish them in time! Now everything except for six books that didn’t fit is on this list!

  4. Count me in!
My list will be the first 20 titles on my recently posted 2019 list with my usual personal bent on the challenge to read all titles down to the spin number. e.g. if 12 is chosen, instead of just reading #12, I’ll try to read #1-12 on my list. As usual, I’ll be hoping for a low number. What could go wrong? Not many are what I would call significantly chunky, but all together …
