  4. My spin book is The Bell Jar. One of just 3 on my spin list that I really didn’t want. Now I’ve had time to think about it, and after discussion on my blog post about it, I’m feeling a little more positive. And at least it’s quite short!

  5. I’ll be reading One Fine Day by Mollie Panter-Downes. I’m very pleased because I’ve heard such good things about it — and it’s very short, which is always a bonus.

  10. I’m down for Shihab al-Din al-Nuwayri’s “The Ultimate Ambition in the Arts of Erudition.” It’s made up of shorter essays, so it should be doable, and an interesting contrast to all “Star Wars” novels I’ve been reading lately!

      1. I’m at Chapter 7 which is the furthest I’ve got in all the times I’ve tried this book. That’s definitely a plus! It’s so wordy without going anywhere. I’m hoping that when Shirley makes an appearance it will get better.

      1. I’m glad I’m not the only one that found this a difficult novel to get into, but I like that both you and Lory ended up enjoying it. This suggests that my perseverance will be rewarded!

      1. I loved Jane Eyre, but Shirley, unfortunately, is not written in that style. If it wasn’t for the Classics Spin I don’t think I would have attempted this novel again. Good luck with it!

        1. I did reread (again)of all her major novels starting in December 2016 and I finished about February or March. Jane Austen is my favourite author so I am always in her texts, on the look out for film adaptations, articles, series, quiz etc. I think this year I will revisit her minor/juvenile works.

          1. I just started reading her last year and adore her books! I finished her major works and am now starting her minor ones! Those are a bit harder to find but I found a few used copies. So curious to read them! Have you read the Kipling short story he wrote about the Janeites? I found it online and plan to read it this month.

            1. No I do not think I have read the Kipling short story, I must look for the story. When you compare the Juveniles with her major work, you will that her writing improve significantly.

    2. Me too, (Kim and I synchronized common titles on purpose.) After this, I only have Sense and Sensibility to complete her main 6. It looks like the odds want me to do so. 😉

As I read my classics in as close to chronological order as I can, I make my challenge to read all the titles on my list down to the chosen number e.g. if the spin number is thirteen, I try to read books 1 through to 13 on my list. I was reluctant to play along this time as I will be hiking in Cornwall for most of April, but with such a low number I only need to read three books and my list was already created so I will be reading

    #1 The Early History of Rome by Livy
    #2 Chaireas and Kallirhoe by Chariton
    #3 The Love Poetry (Elegies) of Propertius

    1. Definitely glad that a low number was picked for you – think of all those books you’d be carrying around in your rucksack whilst hiking! 😉 Seriously, enjoy Cornwall. With luck, it might have stopped raining down here by the time you arrive 🙂

      1. Love Hardy. Far from the Madding Crowd it good. I have seen the old movie with Alan Bates and Julie Christie, but wanting to see the new one. I visited his home in England, and in the museum were clothes they used in the film.

        1. The recent movie with Carey Mulligan is also good. I’ve never seen the earlier movie but have heard good things about it. And how lucky you were to see the costumes!

      1. Thanks for the encouragement! 😀 Haha – despite all my moaning, I do really want to read it – it’s just fitting in such a long book that’s a problem. But that’s why these spins are such good fun – they force us to read whatever comes up and stop putting things off till tomorrow – just like Scarlett! 😉
