Hi, I am new to the world of classics but I thought this would be a great start. I chose to start reading Persuasion by Jane Austen. I would love suggestions of what book to read next. Thanks!

Sara, Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen! Have you read anything else by her? I highly recommend any of her other novels if you liked that one. Or if you want something else very iconic, but somewhat lighter, try Anne of Green Gables or The Blue Castle, both by Lucy Maud Montgomery?

Welcome to classics! What do you like to read normally? That would help with recommendations. For example, if you like mysteries, you could try The Woman in White. Or if you like horror, you should definitely read The Haunting of Hill House.

I have departed from classics for the last month or so and instead spent time reading material for preaching. Now back to Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility!

I finished my list earlier this year, however I have kept my classics reading up. I recently finished reading the Italian classic Sandokan, The Tigers of Mompracem by Emilio Salgari and now, I am reading North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell 🙂

I’m reading Sense and Sensibility for the Jane Austen Read All Along at James Reads Books, and I’m also partway through The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins for my Classics Club reading list. I am liking both much better than I thought I would.

Currently reading the Odyssey book by book as part of my Miracle Morning. Slogging my way through Catch-22 when I find time to read during the rest of the day. I may end up switching around how I read these because I’m enjoying Odyssey so much, but I’m finding every excuse under the sun to avoid Catch-22. I even went to bed early last night rather than read. But I’m reading it for an actual book discussion so I have to get on that.

Oh no! I loved Catch-22. I am planning to reread it very soon. It was the first classic I read with a sense of humor, which really surprised me – I didn’t know it was a funny book before I started it.

I am reading Marie Grubbe, a Danish novel of the late 19th century that was big in Europe but not English-speaking countries, EXCEPT that Zora Neale Hurston read it and then wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God which has the same story skeleton but treats it way differently. O.O
Also, The Go-Between.

I haven’t formally joined the club yet, but I’ve been lurking for a while, so I hope it’s ok to comment!
I’m currently reading three books and two of them could be called classics (the one that can’t is Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese, which is only five years old).
First, Lilith’s Brood by Octavia E. Butler. This is actually three sf novels from the late 80s bound up into one big book. I’m currently in the middle of the second book in the trilogy about aliens coming to earth and saving/enslaving the human race following a huge war that kills most of the population. Not terribly uplifting, but very good sf nevertheless!
Second is William Shakespeare’s Richard III. This is a bit self-explanatory. I wasn’t loving it at the very beginning but then I got to the (first?) murder scene and got into it more 😉
