  1. J.B. Priestley’s “Benighted.” I only wanted to read it because it was the source for the movie “The Old Dark House” — and discovered it’s really amazing!

  2. I read this before I ever heard of the Classics Club, but taking on “The Scarlet Letter” two years ago surprised me. I thought it was a novel for women, really, and didn’t expect the more serious theme of redemption.
