  2. I guess we’re talking classics here. Even so, it’s a pretty impossible task to select the BEST hero/heroine from an uncountable number of novels. The word ‘best’ encompasses so many different qualities. If I were to chose my favourites – which isn’t the same thing at all – I would pick Edmond Dantes (The Count of Monte Cristo -Dumas) and Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice – Austen). Well, of the last, it’s really a toss-up between Elizabeth and Jeanie Deans (The Heart of Midlothian – Scott)
