  7. I got George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia, his account of his experiences in Spain during their civil war in the 1930s. I’m not even sure if it’s seen as a classic as it’s not fiction, but I’m looking forward to it.

  8. I’m reading Lorna Doone R. D. Blackmore! I’ve loved the 2000 film version for years, but have been hesitant to read the book because I don’t want to find one of my favorite movies slaughters the book. That may not happen, but it could. Oh well, I’m game to read it! I even bought my own copy from 1889!

  14. I will be reading Great Expectations.

    If you can believe this, this will be my first Dickens since I read a highly abridged version of David Copperfield as a kid. I am both scared and excited. It is about time I read a bit of Dickens.

    1. I havent read the book, but I do remember seeing a TV mini series based on Great Expectation made back in the early 1980’s – 1981 – I think. It starred a young actor named Graham McGrath as Pip. I really enjoyed watching that one.

    2. Great Expectations was my first Dickens also. I thought it was just great, and I went on to read many more works by Dickens. I hope you enjoy it!

    3. Three Men in a Boat is HILARIOUS. I’ve read it several times and it always makes me laugh. There’s a great audiobook version by Martin Jarvis which is worth seeking out.

      Sadly I did not when I read in my late teens/early 20’s. Even though it and the first one are considered classics in Australia….so much so that two of our biggest literary awards are named after the author – the Miles Franklin award and the Stella’s (for women authors only).

    1. Joined the Club last week and left my 52-strong list in its original order for my first attempt at the Spin – so no surprises that the author falls early in the alphabet! Will be reading “My Antonia” by Willa Cather – has been on my To Read list for years so this is very good news. Great idea and very motivational! Thank you.
