What are your thoughts on adaptions of classics? Say mini-series or movies? Or maybe modern approaches? Are there any good ones? Is it better to read the book first? Or maybe just compare the book and an adaptation?

On a whole, I’m pro-adaptation. In fact, I actually prefer to see the movie first [ insert gasps here ].

Good question, helped me realize just how many of the classics I picked to read were originally chosen because of my love/interest in an adaptation of them! I included more of my response and exploration to these questions in my post today, about The Secret Garden.

hey guys! this is a great topic. I love movies almost as much as I love books so this question is spot on for me. I tend to read the book first, not only with classics but with books in general. I think that nowadays the concern of making a faithful movie adaptation has dropped. we mostly see movies that are “inspired” on the books. same goes for series.

Wonderful question Teresa. Thanks. First, I always prefer to read first. I enjoy the book much better if I have no preconception, even better if I have no clue of the plot. In my current quest of reading 100 greatest novels, I watch a film rendition shortly after reading, and add brief comments on the film. Most often, the film is OK, but the book is better. Of course. There are some where the film is superb (but I still won’t say better than the book): To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lord of the Rings (I’m reading Gone with the Wind now…and we know that film is fantastic). There are several where the film renditions are horrible: Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm. In fact, I tried two different versions of both, and both were terrible. The recent rendition of the Great Gatsby was very good, but the sound track was so incongruous, I can’t give the film full credit. Only one instance thus far when I’d say the film was better: Apocalypse Now an adaptation of Heart of Darkness.
